What is a Unix Timestamp?
The Unix timestamp (also known as Epoch time, POSIX time, or Unix time) is a system for describing a point in time. It is defined as the number of seconds that have elapsed since the Unix Epoch: January 1, 1970, at 00:00:00 UTC, minus leap seconds.
For systems that require sub-second precision, timestamps are often stored in milliseconds (1/1000th of a second).
How to Identify Seconds vs Milliseconds
- Seconds (10 digits): Standard Unix timestamps in seconds are currently 10 digits long (e.g.,
1781234567). They will reach 11 digits in the year 2286. - Milliseconds (13 digits): Timestamps in milliseconds are 13 digits long (e.g.,
1781234567000).
How to Use this Converter
- Live Epoch Clock: The top section shows the current Unix timestamp ticking in real time. You can pause it, copy the value in seconds or milliseconds, or reset it.
- Convert Timestamp to Date: Enter any Unix timestamp in seconds or milliseconds. The tool automatically detects the scale, parses it, and displays:
- UTC time string
- Your local browser time string
- ISO 8601 representation
- Relative time (e.g. “3 hours ago” or “in 2 days”)
- Year/Date breakdowns (leap year status, day of the week, week of the year).
- Convert Date to Timestamp: Input a year, month, day, hour, minute, and second in either your Local timezone or UTC, and instantly get the seconds and milliseconds Unix equivalents.
- Common Epoch Reference Table: Quick formulas and lookup values for common durations in seconds (minute, hour, day, week, month, year) are listed at the bottom for developer convenience.
